3.10pm
A PRISON escapee has managed to spend less than 24 hours out of jail before being taken back into custody.
Albury and Wodonga police arrested Nathan Crisfield at a home on Yambla Avenue in Albury on Tuesday afternoon.
He was arrested about 2.15pm, having escaped from the low security Beechworth jail about 7pm the night before.
Police will apply to extradite him from Albury Local Court back into Victoria.
Police had earlier urged the 27-year-old to hand himself in and warned that anyone who assisted him could face penalties.
He had been spotted in prison greens on the Beechworth-Wodonga Road about three-and-a-half hours after his escape.
Crisfield has strong ties to the Border and some links to Melbourne.
Police had made enquiries with those close to him after his escape in a bid to track him down.
Speaking before the 27-year-old’s arrest, Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer said police were keen to take him back into custody as quickly as possible.
"There are heavy penalties for anyone who aids and abets an escapee of up to five years imprisonment," he said
"If the message does get to him, then certainly contact me.
"We can facilitate you coming in and sorting this out as quick as we can.
"We want him back in custody as soon as we can
“We’re doing everything that we can to make that happen.”
Detective Sergeant Simpfendorfer had said the reason behind the escape was part of the investigation.
Police had suspected Crisfield would stay in the local area, which proved true, and had stressed he posed a low risk to members of the public.
But they had been warned not to approach him and instead call Triple-0.
He is believed to have been serving jail time for driving and drug offences and had been nearing release.
The truck detailer has previously fronted the Wodonga Magistrates Court for ice-related offences.
He was arrested with 6.6 grams of the drug, scales, deal bags and weapons in a car with false plates while on bail in Wodonga last August.
He had a knife and baseball bat on him at the time of his arrest at Apco.
The incident followed the escape of three prisoners from the jail last July.
All three were eventually taken back into custody.
