After mulling over four nicknames for the past week, president Rick O’Connell said yesterday the Group 9 club’s committee had opted for Thunder over the Titans, Pumas and Predators.
O’Connell said Thunder was the stand-out pick after attracting more than 70 per cent of the 300 votes on The Border Mail website.
“It was a fairly strong vote for Thunder in the finish,” O’Connell said.
“It attracted a huge percentage of the vote really and probably surprised us a little.
“It’s good to have something in place so we can work on the logo and get things in place for next season.”
Titans attracted 16 per cent of the vote on the website, with Predators (7 per cent) and Pumas (6 per cent) receiving only a lukewarm response.
After being the Lavington Panthers for the past seven years, members passed a motion for the name change at the club’s annual meeting at Greenfield Park last month. Meanwhile, Albury has landed its first recruiting coup of the off-season by signing young East Brisbane centre Joe Bobbin.
Bobbin played with Todd Rheinberger at the Canberra Raiders and will be another attacking weapon for coach Josh Cale as the club attempts to make its way up the ladder.
"Todd recommended Joe after they played together and it will be good to have him on board,” O’Connell said.
“He will add a bit of strength and pace out wide.”
Albury is confident of keeping the bulk of its playing list with the exception of Ricky Hurunui and Brian Jones who have left the club.
