Father Joel Wallace, the St Patrick’s parish priest, joined about 2000 runners in the Uganda International Marathon, which raised $250,000 for various charities in the Masaka region.
Running as part of the Uganda Kids team on a high altitude mountainous course, Fr Wallace finished his first marathon in four and a half hours.
“It’s not a fast course, only the Olympic quality guys finished in under three hours,” he said.
“There was a Kenyan there who won the day, I think he was back in Kenya by the time I finished.”
Since the June event, Uganda Kids has continued to support two Ugandan schools, with future plans including growing coffee on their present farm and building a high school.
“I’m willing to take on some dangerous, challenging venture if there’s any sponsors interested,” Fr Wallace said with a smile.
