A total of 10 fire crews from Baranduda, Leneva, Kiewa and Bonegilla, as well as two Defence firefighting units from nearby Bandiana, arrived to find the truck and its cargo fully alight just before 9am on Monday morning.
The road was closed for several hours as fire crews doused the truck's cargo to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
The truck's cabin was completely gutted by the blaze.
The truck and cargo belonged to agricultural firm Landmark.
The business has a store less than 100 metres from where the fire happened.
Police and fire investigators are working to determine what sparked the fire.
Baranduda Fire Brigade captain Scott Schilling said crews had responded quickly.
“It was unusual circumstances, it's not every day you see a truck full of hay caught fire in the middle of the road,” he said.
“We got it under control, and are using an excavator to make sure all the hay is extinguished before we let it go.
“These types of fires can be a threat at this time of year, if hay is rolled up tightly it can catch fire.
“Apart from keeping an eye on your hay, there's not much you can do about it – if you see a fire, call 000 straight away.”
Monday morning’s fire is the latest in a string of hay fires to have broken out since early December.
Firefighters on both sides of the Border have been kept busy ensuring blazes at Howlong and Yarrawonga didn’t get out of control.
After starting on December 12, more than $1 million in damage was caused as it took more than a week for the fire to completely burn through roughly half the contents of the shed.
Two broke out on a stock route near Wrights Road, by the Lincoln Causeway, following a similar fire in Tallangatta last Friday afternoon.
Firefighters quickly extinguished all three blazes.
