Southern Cross Developers were presented with the award for the second year in a row at the 2011 Master Builders Regional Building Awards at the Commercial Club last night.
The awards recognised the North East’s top commercial and residential builders.
Southern Cross Developers won the award for construction of the $5 million indoor sports centre at The Scots School.
The company also received an award for excellence in construction of commercial buildings between $3 million and $6 million for the same project.
Southern Cross Developers managing director John Tyrrell said he was delighted the project had been recognised.
“We’re happy and were proud to be able to build it, I spent a couple of years at Scots School myself so to be able to go back and give something back to the school was great,” he said.
“There’s a real high standard of tradespeople in this area and because of that there’s really high competition which brings the best out of us all.”
Mr Tyrrell said the project, which took 12 months to construct, was one of the biggest developments the company had done.
“It would be one of the best ones we’ve worked on, like all buildings they have their difficulties, but we conquered those pretty easily,” he said.
“It’s a terrific thing to be able to be awarded or even to be nominated, it maintains quite a high standard of quality in the region.”
Meanwhile, Albury-based Modem Construction Group were awarded the best renovation-addition $200,000-$300,000 and over $400,000.
Yarrawonga-based Barzen Builders received the award for the best custom home $300,000-$400,000, while Wangaratta’s Sam Lindsey Constructions won the best custom home $400,000-$500,000.
Best sustainable energy home was awarded to Ovens and King Builders, of Wangaratta, while Wodonga’s Premier Building and Construction was recognised for excellence in construction of commercial buildings under $1 million.
Master Builders executive director Brian Welch said the awards were fiercely contested.
“I congratulate the winners for incorporating a high level of quality and workmanship into their projects,” he said.
“Customers in North East Victoria can approach all the builders recognised in these awards with confidence.”
