Supt Elizabeth Stirton takes command on October 13, two months after Supt Gary Commins retired from the top job.
Supt Stirton grew up in the Orange area and said she looked forward to returning to regional NSW.
“After spending my formative years at Orange, I look forward to returning to a major regional centre like Albury,” Supt Stirton said.
“My husband and I visited the region recently and fell in love with the area prompting my decision to seek this new appointment.
“The whole family which includes two dogs can’t wait to settle in to our new surroundings.”
Assistant Commissioner Michael Fuller from Southern Regional Command announced the appointment yesterday.
Supt Stirton joined the police force in 1982 and was initially stationed at Central police station in Sydney on general duties.
She later spent some years in human resource management and also performed the role of commander at a number of busy metropolitan stations.
For the past 13 years she has worked at Kuring-gai, Eastwood and Parramatta.
“I am excited to be beginning a new phase in my policing career, and look forward to meeting the officers at Albury Local Area Command as well as the people who make up the many communities in Albury,” Supt Stirton said.
Member for Albury, Greg Aplin, welcomed the appointment.
“I look forward to working with Supt Stirton as she builds on the good work of her predecessor, Gary Commins,” he said.
“As the area’s first female commander, Supt Stirton will bring a new edge to policing issues and she will be involved in the NSW government review of the Local Area Commands.
“I will be arranging a meeting with Supt Stirton at the earliest opportunity to discuss local issues.”
Insp Brad Blanchard had been acting commander.
