The driver, from near Newcastle in NSW, was on his way home from a dog show in Victoria when he lost control of his station wagon and the custom-made dog trailer it was towing at about 7.40am.
Both north-bound lanes of the highway were closed for about 45 minutes as a result of the crash, which wrote off the dog trailer.
Sen-Constable Mick Desailly from Benalla Police said neither the dogs or their owner were hurt.
“The man and his wife and the dogs were unharmed,” he said.
“They were just waiting for their friends to come and pick up their dogs so they could head back home.”
Sen-Constable Desailly couldn’t say what caused the accident but said no charges would be laid.
Both lanes of the Highway were reopened by 9am.
