Nine-year-old Fraser was Bill and Joy Wearn’s only child.
Fraser, who was conceived through IVF, died on Monday night at Wagga Base Hospital after the buggy he was riding rolled on the family farm near Holbrook, pinning his lower body.
The Wearns yesterday said their little boy had maturity beyond his years. He was an old soul in a young body.
“We all feel shattered, gutted, empty and heartbroken — it’s just emptiness,” Mrs Wearn said.
“It’s so empty. You want to just go and hug him but he’s not there.”
Fraser would have turned 10 on June 5 — the day after his dad Bill turns 50.
Birthdays was one of many things the pair shared.
Always by Bill’s side, Fraser was widely known around Holbrook, whether at a cattle sale or helping on the family farm, “Yammacoona”.
Farm workers knew him as “Mr Have a Chat”; he was always full of questions.
The pair were the best of mates, with Fraser calling his dad Bill.
Mrs Wearn said: “One day Bill asked Fraser, ‘why don’t you call me dad’,
“Fraser just answered: ‘don’t know why I don’t call you dad, Bill’.
“What can you say to that.”
Mrs Wearn said Fraser’s adventurous spirit, infectious laugh and immense love of nature would not be forgotten.
His parents would often find him sitting still, staring out at nature with one arm around his companion, a dog called Chug.
He adored birds, his chooks and had a passion for penguins.
His love for animals ran deep, as he took responsibility for the orphan lambs and calves on the farm.
“At lamb marking, Fraser would want to hug every lamb before it went into the cradle and make sure that every lamb had found its mum out in the paddock,” Mrs Wearn said.
“Fraser always wanted to fly with the birds, now he is.”
His funeral will be held at the family farm, 11am on Monday
