Police are now seeking information on the incident, which occurred in the early hours of last Sunday morning.
Albury police said the 50-year-old male victim was assaulted outside a "number of late-night eateries" in the southern end of Dean Street at 3.15am.
The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance and had suffered serious injury to his sight and hearing.
Insp Tony Moodie said police spoke to several witnesses on the night but he believes there are more who need to come forward to assist with the investigation.
Police would not reveal the how many people were involved or why the victim was assaulted.
“It appears to be a terrible assault,” Insp Moodie said.
“If people know something they need to tell us.”
