Police said the boy, 6, let go of the woman’s hand and ran out in front of a slow-moving Subaru Forester driven by a Wodonga man.
He was struck by the vehicle head on, but sustained only scrapes and bruises to his head and back.
The boy was taken to Albury hospital emergency unit for observation.
Sen-Constable James Donovan said the driver of the vehicle, who he said was not at fault, was left visibly shaken by the encounter.
