Success again eluded the Wagga trainer on Saturday, with My Dear Friend finishing third a year after another Sutherland horse, King’s Council, was pipped in the picnic feature.
But he says he’ll be back.
“For sure, it’s a wonderful day out there” he said.
“A syndicate we train for has a bit of a Dederang contingent and we’re all pretty keen to win the cup for them.
“We’ll try, anyway.”
Despite another luckless run in the feature, it wasn’t all bad news for Sutherland on Saturday, with the trainer landing a double on the day.
Partexpectation ($1.85f) and Rossa Antico ($1.20f) both scored wins at Dederang in races 2 and 6respectively to make the trek into the hills worthwhile.
“Partexpectation’s quite a nice young mare,” Sutherland said.
“It was a nice win.
“The other one, she’s only a new mare for us and there were only two horses in it but she’s won a couple and run third since we got her so we’re happy enough with that.”
Meanwhile, apprentice jockey Amber Comb took just two races to notch up the first win of her career.
She rode the Brian Cox-trained five-year-old Bartazari to an strong six-length win in the fourth race.
