THE heatwave that blasted Albury-Wodonga with four consecutive days of temperatures above 40 degrees has been doing a tour of Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
A high-pressure system that originated over south-west Western Australia on Christmas Day made its way across South Australia and Victoria over the new year and is now headed north-east into Queensland, delivering the searing heat seen throughout southern Australia.
While Queensland is expected to sizzle over the coming days, a cool change has graced the south-east, with a smattering of snow at Mount Hotham in the early hours of yesterday.
However, even though cooler temperatures offered some relief yesterday, the hot weather is due to return at the weekend, although with temperatures not quite as high as those seen over the past week.
Bureau meteorologist Dr Aaron Coutts-Smith said the cold fronts had been much weaker due to the heatwave, however once that significant high pressure begins to ease, temperatures would become more bearable.
“For this weekend, Friday and Saturday will be warmer again, around 38 degrees,” Dr Coutts-Smith said.
“The high pressure system will again move up north and another cold front should come through on Sunday.”
Dr Coutts-Smith said this pattern of consecutive warm days followed by a brief cool change would continue throughout most of the month.
“Temperatures will probably return to a more regular level over the coming weeks, we should see less and less of the extreme heat from the past few weeks,” Dr Coutts-Smith said.
