Police yesterday confirmed they were investigating the incident at a home in Marshall Street that is reported to have occurred about 2.15am on Saturday.
Police said they would provide no further details on the victim or the incident as it was subject to an ongoing investigation.
But Wodonga detective Acting Sgt Andrew Leonard said police were aware of the misleading rumours over the seriousness of the incident that had been circulating via social media and text messages throughout the weekend.
“The rumours floating around that there was a stabbing or murder are incorrect,” Sgt Leonard said.
“There has not been any stabbing or death.
“Police are aware of the rumours and can put the community’s mind at rest that they are incorrect.
“The reality is we are investigating a sexual assault.”
Sgt Leonard said reports the woman involved had her throat cut were also incorrect.
“She has received no injuries as a result of any weapon.
“It was a sexual assault only.”
Sgt Leonard said rumours about the case had “blown out of proportion”, especially on social networking sites.
“It has been unusual,” he said.
Officers with the Victoria Police sexual offence squad were in Wodonga yesterday and have taken charge of the investigation.
The allegation was reported to police on Saturday and a crime scene was established at the Marshall Street residence.
By yesterday, police had concluded their investigations at the scene.
Anyone with information about the alleged assault is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
