The Southern Aurora stopped on the Border as part of its 50th anniversary tour.
It rolled into Albury from Sydney at 8.42am - two minutes late - where former member for Farrer and rail enthusiast Tim Fisher led the about 250 people in a ceremony and three cheers.
When the Southern Aurora first came to Albury in 1962, it carried Prime Minister Robert Menzies in the first Sydney-to-Melbourne trip without a break of guage.
It departed Albury platform at 10.15am for Melbourne, where it will spend two nights before continuing its 11-day birthday tour.
