A Mulwala man, 39, left home to go to the shops at about 4.30pm and returned 20 minutes later to find his terrier lying inside the house.
He soon discovered that his dog had blood coming from its legs and chest.
Sen-Constable Rod Franklin said he didn’t believe the dog had been shot on its owner’s property.
“It’s most likely the dog has wandered off,” he said.
“The area where he lives backs on to state forest and farming area.
“We would like to speak to anyone who might have any information on what has occurred.”
A vet earlier removed shrapnel from the dog’s chest saying it was consistent with a shotgun wound.
The dog is recovering.
