The Ben Seth Memorial is one of the most popular veterans’ tournaments in the state and attracted 114 players from as far afield as Ballarat and Melbourne last Thursday.

The combined ages of the doubles pairings determines what age group they play in and Mueller and Eric Halden claimed the 130 years plus Ben Seth Memorial with an aggregate of 26 games.

They won four, drew one and lost two of their six-game matches to finish three clear of Roger Frankenburg and Frank Tynan.

The Ben Seth Memorial started nine years ago and other age group sections are named in honour of fellow well-known Border tennis identities.

“There were nearly 120 players which is a good size for a veterans’ tournament,” Mueller said.

“I think part of it is because Ben was a good and very well-known player in the district.

“When I first came to Albury in 1982, Ben was one of the first fellows I was in a team with and we played a lot together.

“I have been trying to win this tournament for a while because of our association. Finally we did.”

Mueller had a long connection to the Albury Tennis Association which culminated in life membership in 2000 after serving six years as president and a further five as secretary.
