Nilsson Smyth, 24, showed little emotion as Judge Michael Bourke sentenced him in the Wodonga Coroner’s Court to a non-parole period of six years behind bars.
Smyth reached speeds of up to 180km/h as he led police on a cross-border chase on December 4, 2011, that ended with him losing control of and crashing a car at Bandiana.
He had pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death, reckless conduct endangering life, failing to stop a car at the request of police, unlicensed driving and exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol.
Judge Bourke told Smyth he would have faced up to 11 years’ jail had he decided to fight the charges stemming from the death of Kyralee, 17.
