Wodonga Diamonds hit a brick wall in the heat of their semi-final in the senior men in Sydney, while Albury United’s under 14 girls were knocked out in extra time.
Wodonga Diamonds coach Jimmy Bell said he didn’t have enough rotations in 36 degree heat.
“We were up 1-0 at half-time and while it is not our style of play we probably should have parked the bus and just defended,” he said.
“With about 20 minutes to go Lindfield made 1-1 from a free kick and then it was 2-1.
“We had a limited bench and tried to change it up, go on the attack but we ran out of legs and were tired and they banged in a couple of goals late in the game.”
Bell said the experience showed teams from the Border were more than competitive with metropolitan teams.
“We were still missing five senior players — with a full squad we would have had a real show,” he said.
“The champion of champions showed the AWFA standard has gone up a notch and we can compete at this level.”
