A BLISTERING 33-point performance from Josh McKay against Echuca has helped the Wodonga Wolves charge to the top of the North East Conference in both divisions after another successful weekend at home.
McKay torched the Pirates at Wodonga Leisure Centre yesterday afternoon as an understrength Wolves kept their perfect start to the season intact with a 95 to 60 victory.
With Broady Mills, Scott McLean and Jon Lindhe all missing through illness and injury, McKay put the Wolves on his back.
“Josh was outstanding,” coach Troy Crawford said after yesterday’s win.
“He was absolutely unstoppable.”
With Dale Hickey also forced to sit out late in the game because of cramp, Crawford said this week’s bye couldn’t have come at a better time for the unbeaten Wolves.
“It will give us the chance to re-group and identify a few areas we lapsed in,” he said.
“It was pleasing to see how we handled the adversity and played out the game well.”
Yesterday’s victory followed another comfortable win on Saturday night against Wangaratta.
The Warriors were no match for the home team, dropping both the men’s and women’s games in convincing fashion.
In the men’s game, Wodonga scored an easy 82 to 57 victory.
The Wolves had shot to an 11-point lead by quarter-time and were never troubled from there.
They outscored the Warriors in every term.
Dale Hickey scored 16 points for the winners, nailing four three-pointers in the process.
Kyle McMullan (13) and McKay (10) also contributed to the scoresheet.
In the women’s game, a star showing from Rachel Jeffery proved the highlight in the Lady Wolves’ 91-56 trouncing of the visitors.
Jeffery dropped 27 points, sinking four baskets from beyond the arc.
The Lady Wolves, who were already holding a comfortable 16-point lead at half-time, blew the match out of the water with a 29 to 10 third term.
They ended up winning by 35 points and followed that performance up with another win yesterday.
Both Wodonga teams have started the season 4-0 and look the teams to beat in the North East Conference.
