A TRUCK driver tried unsuccessfully to extinguish flames that engulfed an abandoned motor home at a rest area near Chiltern yesterday.
Police were left baffled as to why the valuable motor home was left deserted at the Ironbark rest area, off the Hume Freeway near Chiltern, when it was set alight about midnight.
Wodonga Detective Sgt Graeme Simpfendorfer said the motor home was destroyed.
“We have the registration details but we are still trying to contact the owner,” Sgt Simpfendorfer said.
“We are not treating the fire as suspicious at this stage.”
Crime scene investigators analysed the vehicle and it was towed away.
Sgt Simpfendorfer said police would like to speak to any witnesses.
“A truck driver tried to extinguish the flames without success,” he said.
“We would like to speak to anyone who may have information.”
Meanwhile, a car was found burnt-out at Mount Baranduda yesterday.
Police said the Hyundai Excel was stolen from Wodonga during the weekend and left at the scene.
Investigations were continuing.
