Mahaffey has spent the past 13 years manning the microphone, mapping out draws and programming matches as assistant tournament director of the Margaret Court Cup at Albury Grasscourts.
The “voice” of the Australian Money Tournament says it’s become a tradition.
“I guess I’m one of the originals,” Mahaffey said yesterday.
“You catch up with people you don’t see for 12 months and watch the kids grow up and improve their tennis.
“It’s an AMT event now and there are always a lot of good people down here.”
Mahaffey has been a long-time supporter of the Albury Tennis Club and Albury Tennis Association and served as a country director of the South West region for Tennis NSW.
The jovial giant says the grass courts help make the Margaret Court Cup different from many other tournaments.
“A lot of the kids come here just to play on them,” he said.
“We’re pretty lucky here.”
Mahaffey will swing back into action himself for Albury Gold’s section two men’s team when Albury Tennis Association pennant resumes on February 1.
