A man, who is yet to be identified, died after the vehicle he was driving swerved off the road and crashed into a tree.
Police said the driver left the Hume Freeway about 7pm, crashing into a tree and causing the vehicle to burst into flames.
The crash caused a grass fire between the two Euroa exits but firefighters last night had the blaze under control.
A total fire ban has been declared for all of Victoria today and a similar declaration is likely tomorrow.
The provisional state road toll now stands at 12, twice as many as the same time last year.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
