The unseeded Wurtz defeated West Australian Alan Gooch 6-2 6-2 in the final in Hobart yesterday.
The win followed his doubles success with Bendigo’s Terry Smith the previous day.
The right-hander said it was a huge thrill after several narrow singles losses in recent years.
“It’s good to finally get there,” Wurtz, 66, said.
“I have lost a few close ones in tiebreakers in quarter and semi-finals over the past couple of years, so it’s good to get that first national singles title — it’s been a while coming.”
Wurtz was surprisingly overlooked in the seedings and had to defeat some of the highest ranked players on his way through the four matches.
Brother Rodney bowed out of the over 60 singles in the quarter-finals.
Wurtz and Smith have won five doubles titles together since entering the veterans competition about 17 years ago.
More than 200 players competed in the veterans’ championships in Hobart, including a Japanese team.
