Benalla CFA captain Bill Polworth said firefighters were called to the Albert Street home at 6.45pm.
Mr Polworth said the young couple understood to be living in the house were not home during the fire.
“It has burnt up through the roof and has done a fair bit of smoke damage and most of the ceiling has collapsed,” he said.
Three Benalla fire trucks responded with about 40 firefighters, mostly volunteers arriving on-scene separately, tackling the fire.
