Mr Fischer, pictured, said when contacted by The Border Mail yesterday, he had “no comment” to reports he could replace Marie Bashir in the role.
The former member for Farrer and National Party leader has lived on the Border since returning from Rome as Australia’s first resident ambassador to the Holy See.
Former High Court judge Michael Kirby is also reported to be in the mix for the role.
Professor Bashir is due to step down in September.
