The fire, which burnt two double doors of the Victoria Hotel in Carrier Street, was reported to Benalla detectives yesterday after potential buyers of the pub, which has been empty since mid last year, discovered the damage.
Detective Sgt Shannon Murphy said mail was put under the doors around the corner from Carrier Street and set alight.
“That has resulted in significant damage to the doors, but mostly superficial,” Sgt Murphy said.
“The fire was self-extinguished after a short time and hasn’t taken hold.”
He said investigators suspect the fire was lit on the weekend, but it could have happened weeks ago given the pub was closed.
It is the second arson attack detectives are investigating after a car was set alight in Mitchell Street at 1.40am on Sunday.
