Ryan Cobain, 19, has capped his rise from junior prodigy to senior regular by becoming the latest nomination for the SS & A Rising Star Award.
The former Murray Bushrangers player is the third nomination for the award behind Yarrawonga’s Bronson Schofield and Corowa-Rutherglen’s Hayden Filliponi.
Cobain, recruited from Ovens and Murray rival Wangaratta Magpies, has played 10 senior games and six in the reserves this season.
He featured in the best on eight occasions in his 13 games for the Hawks in the thirds last year, starring in the club’s narrow loss to the Magpies in the grand final.
Cobain, who is also a talented cricketer for Bruck, is the son of former Wangaratta and Yarrawonga coach, Rod.
Wangaratta Rovers have unearthed several outstanding prospects this season with classy mid-fielder Ash Pollard leading the way.
Pollard has regularly been among the Hawks best players while Marcus Panozzo and Sam Caruso have also been key factors in the club’s climb up the ladder.
The Rovers travel to Birallee Park to face Wodonga Raiders this week.
