Benalla man flown to hospital after bashing

A MAN has bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull following an assault in Benalla overnight.

A Benalla man, 50, was last night charged with assault and assault with a weapon and was bailed to face the Benalla Magistrates' Court at a later date.

Benalla Detective Sgt Shannon Murphy said a man punched another man, 46, through his bedroom window at Ballantine Street before hitting him, again through the window, with an axe handle or piece of wood on the head.

Sgt Murphy said the victim was flown to The Austin Hospital this morning with bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull.

It's believed the victim's condition has since stabilised.

Sgt Murphy said the suspect and the victim were known to each other.
