The woman, 43, from Dubbo in NSW, sent a text message to her husband late on Thursday to say she was lost and out of water while trekking through the Alpine National Park.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the hiker was located by rescuers at 10am this morning in the Howitt Plains area near Wonnangatta.
Rescuers are now deciding whether to winch her to safety or use a ground crew to get her out.
She has been communicating with rescuers.
Police helicopters, search and rescue squad police, the SES and CFA volunteers were involved in the search.
