Mellington will take over from Lavington speedster Michael Gibbons with Nick Coughlan and Caleb Marchbank to act as his deputies.
The leadership group is rounded out by Nathan Drummond, Jackson Clarke and bottom age representative Dylan McDonald.
Coach Darren Ogier said he believed Mellington would be a fine leader.
“Nick demonstrated great leadership throughout 2013 and during the pre-season,” Ogier said.
The Bushrangers will take on the Bendigo Pioneers at Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve in their opening round match tomorrow.
In other matches, Gippsland Power lock horns with Dandenong, Western Jets take on Sandringham, Eastern Ranges play Oakleigh, North Ballarat Rebels do battle with Geelong and Calder Cannons meet the Northern Knights.
