The 35-year-old has had almost 200 games in the top flight of Australian soccer.
Thompson is expected to return to the Border as a sales rep for an un-named district building firm with links to the Wanderers in what would be a dove-tailed finish to his stellar career.
The veteran striker also holds the goal scoring record for a single international match — 13, against American Samoa in a 31–0 victory in 2001.
But given the depth of talent at Twin City, it is likely Thompson may take up a position in the midfield rather than displace Zac Walker.
Happy April Fools’ Day, fans.
