Gerry Smith has this morning been unveiled as the new administrative boss for the shire which includes Rutherglen, Beechworth, Yackandandah and Chiltern.
Indigo Mayor Bernard Gaffney said Mr Smith had been chosen from 62 applicants.
He replaces Brendan McGrath who has been appointed chief executive of Wangaratta Council.
“Gerry has a wealth of experience in both the public and private sectors," Cr Gaffney said.
"He is a man of values and high integrity and will focus on the needs of the community.
“Gerry was an absolute standout of the 62 candidates.
"He has a very positive outlook and the personality and skills to take this shire forward.
"He is very community-minded and council looks forward to working with him.”
Mr Smith is currently the director of organisational development and urban safety at Moreland Council in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.
Mr Smith, who will start on June 2, rose to be an officer in the army before switching careers to local government.
