John Paul Cole, 35, faced Wangaratta Magistrates Court charged over the crash which saw a Holden Commodore strike a pole along Bright's Churchill Avenue early on Saturday morning.
A passenger in the car suffered fatal injuries.
Cole, who moved to Bright six months ago, appeared on charges of culpable driving, driving causing death, failure to stop and failure to render assistance.
He did not apply for bail in court this morning.
However, Cole's solicitor indicated there would be an application for bail on Thursday.
Police plan to oppose bail.
Following the mention of the case, Cole gave the thumbs-up to supporters in the court room.
He was remanded in custody to reappear at the same venue on Thursday.
