Renewable energy is squarely in its sights with solar and wind programs steadily being wound back.
And just when the carbon tax was having a positive effect on the level of carbon emissions, it, too, is to be abolished.
In the face of one of the warmest Mays on record and the announcements last week by the leaders of the US, India and China of new measures to combat global warming, one can only scratch one’s head in bewilderment.
Mr Abbott, however, gave the game away last week, when speaking to the Mineral Council of Australia.
Feeling at home among supporters, he scoffed at suggestions Australia should slow its mining of its polluting reserves of coal.
This, at a time when other countries are slowing their use of coal in the face of raising pollution levels.
If he was serious about the debt crisis, why would he abolish the mining tax, spend $12 billion-plus on dodgy American warplanes and ignore other revenue measures from the big end of town?
Why does he not look at tax- avoiding trusts and negative gearing?
It is not surprising the public has seen through his unfair and flawed budget of taking from the poor and the environment and leaving the wealthy virtually untouched.
Surely Robin Hood in reverse.
