Police pulled over a hire car near the corner of Phillipson and Rowan streets about 1am yesterday.
Sgt Tim Hart said officers spoke to the occupants of the vehicle and became suspicious.
“They provided a vague and confusing explanation about visiting Wangaratta in a hire car,” he said.
“Suspicions were raised by police and a subsequent search allegedly located methamphetamine, or ice, ecstasy and GHB in the car.
“We’re not releasing exact quantities at the moment, but there was a trafficable quantity of ice.
“A significant amount of cash was also seized.”
A man 27, and woman, 25, both from Craigieburn, were charged with trafficking a drug of dependence.
“Due to the fact both of them were already on bail for drug-related offences, they were presented directly to Wangaratta court (yesterday) for a further remand hearing,” Sgt Hart said.
The officers involved had to be praised for their actions, Sgt Hart said.
“It was intuitive police work by our young officers.”
The man did not apply for bail at Wangaratta Magistrates Court yesterday and will reappear in court on July 21.
The woman applied for bail, which was refused, and will reappear before court July 28.
