Maree Jacobs, Margaret Lenehan and Jan Skinner reminisced at Lavington Library yesterday at the book launch of Two Decades of Albury Floral Festivals.
“I remember someone saying I would never win if I wore black,” Mrs Jacobs (1971 queen) said.
The mother-of-four adult children went on to crown Mrs Skinner as the final queen in 1972.
The week-long Floral Festival was a Border social highlight from 1951 to 1972, with its parades of floral display floats, decorated bicycles, balls and dances.
Mrs Skinner and Mrs Lenehan remember the sense of community the festival created.
“It’s great to have this period in time recorded in this book, it’s part of Albury’s history that should live on forever,” Mrs Skinner said.
City museum collections officer Victoria Cooper wrote the book and Albury and District Historical Society published it with the help of a council grant.
Society life member Jan Hunter launched the publication and opened a display. The book is available at the Albury and Lavington libraries for $12.50.
