Police have been told a shot was fired at two men in Prune Street, near Kaitlers Road about 3.20am.
After the pair got out of a friend’s car, another man driving past in a grey or black Holden Commodore had yelled at them before firing a shot.
But police have not yet found evidence of a bullet, casing or any damage.
They are now inspecting security footage from a nearby business for clues.
Sgt Angus Longley said the alleged shooter may have had a passenger in his car.
“It’s a rare incident in Albury for an alleged drive-by shooting to occur,” he said.
“The victims gave a description of the vehicle of interest.
“The CCTV footage is being reviewed to see if we can identify anyone who may be involved.”
No one was injured.
Detectives are looking for a Caucasian man in his 20s. He was said to be wearing a black hat and black T-shirt.
Police are also seeking assistance with the theft of a distinctive black 1994 Nissan S13 Silvia coupe.
The car was taken from a house in Forrest Drive, Thurgoona, on Friday night or Saturday morning, along with tools and spare parts.
Police believe the car may have been loaded on to a trailer and towed from the area.
The car has several modifications which police say should make it easily identifiable.
They called for information on both matters.
