THE North East could have another fully sealed road to East Gippsland after VicRoads agreed to take responsibility of the entire length of the Benambra-Corryong Road.

VicRoads has already agreed to take over the 30-kilometre section of the road from the Colac Caravan Park to the Dunstans Logging Road presently under the care of Towong Council.
The roads authority is responsible for a middle section of the road, which is unsealed, before it joins the remaining section of the road near Benambra which is under the care of East Gippsland Shire.
Subject to final agreement between VicRoads and East Gippsland Shire on some “minor things” lobbying for the road will soon begin in earnest.
Letters have been prepared for member for Riverina Michael McCormack, member for Gippsland Darren Chester and Senator Scott Ryan seeking meetings to discuss the sealing of the road.
The Benambra-Corryong Road begins at the Murray Valley Highway near Corryong, and Towong Council director Jamie Heritage said VicRoads’ agreement to take responsibility for the entire length of the road was imminent.
“It is a key link road for the region,” he said.
The fully sealed section under the care of Towong Shire also includes several bridges and once in the control of Vic- Roads it will reduce annual maintenance costs.
The North East has three fully sealed roads to East Gippsland.
The most recent to be fully sealed was the Omeo Highway between Mitta and Omeo.
The last spots to be sealed were two sections of gravel road between Mitta and the former mining area of Glen Wills at a cost of $14.9 million.
It was an election promise made by the member for Benambra, Bill Tilley.
The Great Alpine Road through Mount Hotham is the route of choice for many, with the other connection being the Bogong High Plains Road through Falls Creek.
