DIMINUTIVE Wangaratta youngster Hugh Amery has become the third Magpie to win the Leo Dean award.
Amery joined Louis Vescio (2013) and Max Ketchup (1974) as winners of the third grade best and fairest after polling 23 votes to edge out Lavington’s Aaron Jory by one.
Jory charged home with 11 votes in the final four rounds.
Rugged Albury centreman Dominic Brew (21), Pigeon Travis Hargreaves (18) and high-marking Albury forward Zach Sproule (16) rounded out the top five.
“It’s good to win this award,” Amery said.
“I’m pretty surprised.”
Amery shapes as a key player for Wangaratta when it meets Lavington in the grand final on Sunday.
“The boys have had a really good year,” he said.
“It was a surprise we got straight into the grand final a couple of weeks ago by beating Albury and everyone is looking forward to the grand final.”
Meanwhile, Yarrawonga’s Marcus Hargreaves and Jory tied for the McRae Holden-The Border Mail award.
