I would like to point out that there is a lot of good in the Australian people.
I have just been struck down by a fatal unexpected disease and people have been bending over backwards to help my wife and myself.
We came home one day and the local Men’s Probus Club had cut our lawns.
An unexpected knock on the door resulting in a cuppa and a talk can be the highlight of my day, even had a mechanic come up from Melbourne to fix our car at no charge.
Unfortunately pancreatic cancer is not a very glamorous type and it gets virtually no publicity, meaning no disrespect to other forms which receive the bulk of publicity.
All cancers are a vicious, frightening disease and my heart goes out to anyone with any form of it.
There has been a foundation started to try to get pancreatic disease understood by the general public and studied more closely.
A group called Pancare Foundation, 48 Bell Street, Heidelberg Heights 3081, 1300 881 698 is trying hard to raise funds, especially directed at country people.
While I was in The Austin Hospital, Melbourne, they made offers for accommodation for my wife and also provided taxi vouchers so that she could get around to visit me without getting lost.
Although aimed mainly at country people, I feel they would help anyone involved with pancreatic cancer.
I am trying to make country people aware that there is such a service and you don’t have to be alone if you are caught in a predicament such as we were of not knowing about any available help.
Any help no matter how small would be appreciated by this group, as they are doing the best they can.
We feel very humbled at the support we are receiving from Beechworth people.
There are a lot of good people out there. May God bless them all.
