The 18-year-old from Beechworth, who graduated from the Flying Fruit Fly Circus last week, received the Noel Tovey Achievement Award last night.
Artistic director Jodie Farrugia said it was a huge achievement.
“Noel Tovey is a really highly regarded indigenous performing artist in Australia,” she said.
“This award goes out once a year to a person who has shown an achievement with their skills or personal achievement.
“It has a $1000 reward for a young person to put towards their future dreams.”
The award was presented to Mr Johnson by previous winner Phillip Murray, who performs hip-hop under the name Philly.
Ms Farrugia was contacted by Mr Tovey after he saw Johnson performing earlier this year.
“He felt so moved by Zach’s performance and wanted to offer him the award,” she said.
