Ted Landon is now an Order of Australia Medal recipient, having been honoured for his contribution to the community and health care organisations.
He was the chief executive of the Albury Base Hospital from 1960 to 1990 and president of the Commercial Club from 1997 to 2004.
“I would never have thought in my wildest dreams I would get an honour,” Mr Landon said.
“It’s a great privilege and when I accepted it I thought of some of the people I’ve worked with over the years, it’s really more for them and for my family, which allowed me to travel a fair bit with the hospital as well as the time and support to do these things.”
Mr Landon grew up at Culcairn and began his work in the health system as a clerk at Corowa before moving to Lockhart.
He was transferred by administrators to the then Wodonga Place-based Albury Base Hospital in 1958 and became its deputy chief.
After taking control in 1960, Mr Landon oversaw services at the hospital and planned for its eventual relocation to East Albury, where it opened in 1994.
“I got great support there from people at all levels, from the doctors, domestic staff and administrators,” Mr Landon said.
His involvement in the Commercial Club followed his departure from the hospital.
“I retired in 1990 and there was an election for the board of the Commercial Club and I thought I’ve got to do something and I nominated and they said ‘it will take years to get on the board’ and I got on straight away,” Mr Landon said.
Six years later he was president and he has been treasurer since 2005, the same year he was made a life member.
Mr Landon’s time at the club has coincided with its building space expanding and a multi-storey car park being erected as well as challenges through smoking bans and poker machine taxation.
Other community contributions made by Mr Landon include helping form the Albury Central Probus Club, secretarial duties for Albury Rotary Club and being a JP.
