NSW Supreme Court judge Patricia Bergin handed down the sentence in Sydney this morning.
The contempt related to an ongoing dispute between Duncan-Strelec, 59, and Gold Coast mayor and property developer Tom Tate, which saw false and defamatory allegations published on a website.
She was found guilty of five of seven charges of contempt of court last August with sentencing adjourned until this morning.
Justice Bergin took into account Duncan-Strelec's previous good character and public service in reaching her sentence.
Under the order, Duncan-Strelec is required to be of good behaviour for 12 months and if she breaches that undertaking she may be re-sentenced.
