Essendon has won the race for the utility, who has developed into one of the O and M’s excitement machines, who has the ability to play forward and in the midfield.
Essendon’s VFL rivals Casey Scorpions and Werribee also showed interest, as did SANFL club Central Districts, but the Bombers won out.
Marklew will start pre-season training with the club on Monday in the hope of winning a spot on the list.
He could still nominate the Rovers as his home club and play in the O and M when not required at VFL level.
“I might as well have a crack while I’m young,” the 19-year-old said.
“I’m looking forward to pre-season and getting fit and if I get on their list that’s a bonus.
“It will be an awesome experience.”
Marklew booted 29 goals from his 18 games this year, and 34 from 20 games in 2014.
