The six-year-old son of Troy Anthony Holland’s most recent victim cried hysterically and pleaded for him to leave his mother alone during the stabbing last year.
Holland had been in a state of extreme anger and believed the victim had been conspiring against him.
He had been using large amounts of ice in the weeks leading up to the attack.
Holland had bumped into the victim in Wodonga last February shortly after finishing a 15-month stint in jail.
He had been in a casual relationship with the woman for a few weeks before being jailed, which resumed after his release.
She ended the relationship and told Holland not to come to her home as he was becoming more abusive.
His anger came to a head on August 29 when he attended her home, armed with the weapon, and punched the woman several times in the head, causing her to fall to the ground.
He removed the leather tool and stabbed the woman nine times in her neck, shoulder and torso before running from the area after being seen by a neighbour.
Holland later asked people if she had died.
Judge Frances Hogan noted Holland had grown up in a happy and stable childhood but began using drugs, including speed.
He used the drug for a decade before moving to methamphetamine six years ago.
“It is high time that you learned that a woman with whom you have a relationship is not your property,” the judge said.
Holland was sentenced last month to five years in jail. He will be eligible for parole in three-and-a-half years.
