Thirty-five riders on the Amy’s Share The Road Tour finished day three of their 835-kilometre journey from Canberra to Melbourne by meeting students at St Joseph’s Primary School.
Organised by the Amy Gillett Foundation, the visit included a talk on bike safety by the late cyclist’s mother, Mary Safe.
Mrs Safe said cycling was a great activity for all ages, but there needed to be increased awareness of appropriate rider and driver behaviour.
“The more people out cycling, the more it raises the profile and the safer we will all be,” she said.
“Really it gets down to attitude; understanding that everybody on a bike is somebody who’s important to other people and we need to look at them as human beings.”
Amy Gillett, an elite cyclist, was killed by a driver in 2005 while training in Germany with the Australian women’s team.
