A Ssangyong Rexton appeared to have been set on fire on the Murray Valley Highway near Tallangatta about 12.45am on Tuesday.
A projectile had been thrown through the windscreen of the vehicle, which had earlier broken down.
The owner planned to retrieve the car but it was destroyed.
An early-model Holden Commodore was also torched in Lewington Street, Wodonga, 24 hours earlier.
Detective Senior Constable Andrew Leonard said flames had the potential to spread through grassland.
“Police take these matters seriously and I'm sure 99 per cent of the community share those concerns,” he said.
