Ashley “Drac” Russell, 46, died when a firework exploded on the banks at Gippsland Lakes at Hollands Landing.
Witnessed described hearing a loud explosion and he died at the scene.
A statement released by his family to The Border Mail said Mr Russell would be deeply missed.
“He was a man with a heart of gold and a personality larger than life,” they said.
“His generosity knew no bounds.
“He lived for his family and friends and will be truly missed.”
The keen outdoors enthusiast, motorbike rider and fisherman would be “forever a legend”, his family said.
“(He was) a man of many talents who could turn his hand at anything,” they said.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp said police felt for the family during a trying time.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
