The Harlequin Mini Meat is an Australian breed developed by Denis Russell in South Australia who also had rare four-horned sheep on show at Bunyip Hollow, which hosted a three-day on farm display of the unusual sheep.
“Denis was here with his four horns but they were all sold on Saturday,” said leading Harlequin Mini Meat breeder Sandy Simpkins, from Murrayville in western Victoria.
“I just find them easy to handle. I’m pretty much hooked on them and Ryan (Hamood), my stock manager, has started a Facebook page to spread the word, he’s dead keen on them.”
Mr Hamood became interested in the breed about two-and-a-half years ago, after previously working with other breeds of hair sheep, such as the African fat-tailed Damara. “The amazing colours initially got my interest.’’
The sheep produces a sweet meat without the waxy, lanolin flavour found in some European breeds.
Bunyip Hollow operator Cyan von Gija was pleased with the response to the open gate weekend.
