After spending time with Werribee in the VFL, Porter has been a major reason behind the Magpies’ undefeated start to the year.
Porter was best-on-ground in Wangaratta’s 10-goal win against Wodonga Raiders on Good Friday and will be a key figure when they meet fellow undefeated side Yarrawonga for outright top spot on Saturday week.
He has been very pleased with the positive start to the season.
“Internally, we set ourselves a goal to start 3-0 and we’ve been able to do that, so the feeling is pretty good around the club and Stony (coach Dean Stone) is pretty pleased with how we’ve started,” he said.
“Friday night was probably a complete performance from the team and it was nice to get on the end of a couple.”
“The first few practice games I was getting used to playing with a lot of the guys.
“There’s a lot of younger guys I haven’t played much footy with, so it’s been good to get to know them and how they play.
“Coming back, I’ve been trying to give a bit of my knowledge to the younger blokes and help them out in the forward line.
“It helps we’ve got a few guys who have played football at a higher level to give the younger guys confidence that we’re going to be there to help them along the way.”
Porter is now ready to test himself against one of the competition’s front runners in the Pigeons.
“They’ve obviously been strong with their start to the season too and are sitting at the top of the ladder,” he said.
“They’ve got a few new recruits playing really well for them and we’ve got some blokes playing really well for us, so it should be a good match up.”
However, Porter’s availability for the entire season hinges on a potential overseas opportunity.
“I’ve applied to do some study overseas, but I haven’t really found out about it,” Porter said.
“I’m just taking it week by week at the moment.
“I’m not too sure of the outcome just yet, I’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”
